Sat. 12.31.16 – Dear 2016, I had so many hopes for you. Hopes of a good year, a year of progress, a year of healing, a year of forward movement. While you weren’t so bad to me personally, as I did have forward movement in my own life. But you were a rather awful year in many other aspects.
2016, you were a year of closures and deaths.
Goodbye, 2016. Farewell to David Bowie, Price, and Carrie Fisher. Farewell to any remaining respect that I had for the United States of America. I will be telling folks from now on that I am a Californian.
Closer to home, farewell to Mr. Scruffy McDoglet.
Wed. 11.30.16 – 2016 seems to be the year of endings. After the US Elections, I saw several folks on Twitter calling 2016 ‘anno horribilis’. I am not quite ready to call it a horrible year, as we still have another month to the year for a major tsunami, nuclear war, asteroid strike, a plague that kills billions, gamma ray from an exploding star, etc.
But 2016 is/was definitely the year of endings. My Grandpa Jim died. Scruffy died. My brother’s friend Art died of cancer. The American Republic may be going into hospice care come January. And Nicole Hunter Mostafa, one of the few personal bloggers who was still personally blogging for the love and joy of it passed away. Damn cancer.
I feel even more than ever that it is time for me to take back up with my own version of personal mixed with life mixed with professional mixed with tech mixed with humor blogging, as I truly believe that making and creating in the face of adversity is how we best express our humanity. Although I may suck at blogging on a regular schedule, I will do my best to blog here a few times a week and on some weeks more.
Dear 2016, please calm down for the next 31 1/2 days.
Fri. 11.11.16 – After weeks of struggling to walk and many other old guy indignities, this week Scruffy declined to the point of being unable to stand and go to the bathroom. I was told by my Aunt Anne and Vivian Hernandez that when a dog could not work its back end that the end would be near.
After two uncomfortable days, Scruffy woke up at 3am this morning whining and tapping my leg with his front paw. I took him outside and held his back end up so he could pee, to no avail. I carried him back in, gave him so water to drink, and went back to sleep – for about a half hour until he started to make noise again. This cycle lasted for the rest of the early morning hours and by 10am he was done. Around 10:10am this morning Scruffy McDoglet ran off to the Doggy Elysian Fields.
I am gutted. Scruffy was a very good dog and occasionally a real little f’er. He was not only a great little buddy – my best dog – to me but also to my brother, Joe with whom I shared Scruffy, and to the whole family.
Scruffy-licious Alidocious T. McDoglet, Esq.- you will be greatly missed.
Thurs. 11.10.16 – This is a very rocky week. Starting the day of the election, Scruffy’s back end and legs stopped working for him and by yesterday morning he was unable to walk or even raise up and stabilize his legs.
We had already planned to visit Erika and Lukas today so that Lukas could play with Belle. Erika let Lukas know that Scruffy was at the end of his life and that Lukas would most likely not see him again. Near the end of the visit, Lukas wanted to sit on the couch with an ailing Scruffy in his lap. It was very sweet.
In this photo, Erika was telling Lukas the story of the first time that Lukas met Scruffy.
Mon. 11.07.16 – On the 7th of November in the year 2003, Mr. Scruffy-licious Alidocious T. McDoglet was born to a pedigreed Maltese family. Within two months, Scruffy – not his birth name – was denied access into the American Kennel Club for having more than the 3-4 regulation spots and hair too thin for a AKC Maltese, whereupon he departed and moved to California.
In March of 2004, Jenifer Hanen (me) and her brother, Joe, found Scruffy on Craigslist and within days he joined the family. Jenifer promptly bought Craig a Jack & Coke at 20×2 that year at SXSWi to thank him for starting a website that allowed her and her brother to get a great dog. Craig likes dogs and was happy that we got Scruffy on his List.
Happy Birthday to the best maltese dog on the planet… Scruffy McDoglet!
Sun 01.31.16 – On our Sunday drive this afternoon, I pulled over at the Echo Point vista point on the Parker Dam Road – California side – and rolled down the window so that I could take photos of the burros across the road. Scruffy used this opportunity to sit in my lap and watch a young burro standing directly across the road – a stare down between canine and equine proceeded.
