Fri 02.27.15 – Two photos of two of the most beautiful things to be found this evening: Venus and the container ships as seen whilst stopped at the Pacific Coast Highway & Seapoint light in Huntington Beach and Belle le Cane and her ball after dinner. Belle would like you to throw her ball.
These two photos taken within an hour or two of each other re-remind me how much I love my Nikon D800 camera with the Nikon 50mm f/1.4G lens. It is a simple but rockstar combo for great photos. Rather than buying several lenses or even one mid-range zoom, do yourself and your photos a favor and splash out for one good to great 50mm lens, then take lots of photos.
Fri 11.21.14 – This afternoon Scruffy, Belle, and I went on a walk at Irvine Regional Park in Orange to have the opportunity to enjoy the very brief spurt of autumn weather we are having and to possibly see some trees in their fall glory. It was lovely, the air was crisp-ish, the park was fairly empty of people, and the dogs had a great time sniffing all the smells.

Sun 01.19.14 – Yesterday, my Mom, Scruffy, and I drove to Anza-Borrego Desert State Park and Borrego Springs via a circuitous route through Oceanside, Pala, the Pauma Valley, Julian, and then finally over the mountains eastbound to the Anza-Borrego State Park and Borrego Springs in northeastern San Diego county.
I wanted to see the desert and its flora, my Mom wanted to go see the Galleta Meadows sculptures that ring the outskirts of Borrego Springs.
We started out from Huntington Beach at 10am and I dropped my Mom back off at 10pm. While a bit of a whirlwind, and yes we probably should have stayed in Borrego Springs, but I am glad we went. The Galleta Meadows sculptures were fun, the food at Carmelita’s was good, and the stars / Milky Way we saw driving east towards the Salton Sea were amazing.
Next time I want to spend more time exploring the upper Anza-Borrego desert and go hiking in the Palm canyon area.
Sat 09.07.13 – I have discovered what the Nokia Lumia 1020 does best (bestest) : Dusk and backlit photos. This camera phone is a champ at getting all the colors in half-light / low light with no HDR, no editing or post-processing. It is really extraordinary.
Sun 06.30.13 – On this Sunday, CJ and I went up to Santa Monica’s Back on the Beach Cafe to meet up with Jason S, Chuck, Tiffany B, and Jason T for brunch and then a walk down the boardwalk to the Santa Monica Pier. It was a lovely day catching up with friends and I took my Nikon FM3a film camera with me to the party loaded with Ilford XP2 Super 400 B&W film.
I have a new true love, besides my friends, in the Ilford XP2 Super 400 film. I love the grain, the contrast, the no need for any post-production other than adding metadata in Lightroom. Next to Fuji Velvia 50, it is my new true film love.
Thanks to Jason, Tiffany and Jason for letting me take their photos.
Sat 06.01.13 – Happy June and the start of the official June Gloom season here in Southern California, although we have had the inversion layer of clouds part day or all day since March this year. Or in your part of the world, it maybe the start of summer or winter.
The cacti in my brother’s backyard bloom once a year for approximately 24-48 hours. Yesterday’s amazing, extravagant, big blooming cactus flower is today’s crestfallen, squash-ed end of bloom.
There are a few more cacti who will bloom this week and I will trot over to document their once a year cacti-sex pollen festival.
In other news, I accompanied my brother and Christine to Bert’s Mega Mall in Azusa this afternoon and as usual, Bert’s Mega Mall was a very interesting place to people watch.
Another photo from Wed the 24th during the golden hour as the light was so nice that evening with the dark clouds over the land and the last of the sunlight sliding under the clouds to light up the evening.
