UnleashTV Special- Microsoft buys Nokia (Smart Devices Division)

Mon 09.02.13 – This evening Nokia and Microsoft announced that MSFT is buying Nokia phones division, leaving networks, maps, and Advanced Tech/R&D to Nokia Oy.
Immediately Clinton Jeff messaged me asking if I would join and Unleash the Phones UnleashTV Special on the Microsoft and Nokia deal.
The above video is our UnleashTV Special broadcast. Language, esp at the beginning, is NSFW.
My take away is that I find it interesting that Microsoft/Nokia deal talks failed earlier in the summer, Ballmer announces early retirement last week, and now Microsoft/Nokia deal is back on. Fascinating.

Thurs 08.22.13 – As Scruffy and I were on our evening walk through Seal Beach, I saw this magnolia flower peeping out from a line of small magnolia trees acting as fence. The flower was right at my shoulder level and I didn’t have to strain or zoom to take a photo of it, other than moving a few leaves and getting both the Nokia Lumia 1020 and the 808 PureView close-up to the flower.
Best part was that with the Nokia Lumia 1020, I just had to tap on the screen to tell it where I wanted to focus and I didn’t need to set the manual focus in the Pro Cam app. I was about 5 – 6 inches (12-15cm) from the center of the flower. On the Nokia 808 PureView, I did have to set it to “close-up” mode and even then it had the red focus rectangle and not the green.
The Lumia 1020 is very clear and the 808 is a bit soft, esp. in the area of focus – the center stalk of the flower, given how close I put both camera phones to the subject. But the 808 PureView’s color is much truer to real life. I find that if I remember, in the moment, to set the Lumia 1020’s white balance off of Auto and to the actual light situation (sunny, cloudy, etc.) the color will be more accurate and not as yellow-ish.
Sorry about the attack of Magnolia leaf in the bottom right hand corner of the Nokia 808 PureView, but top of holding the leaves back I also had two camera phones and one dog leash to only two hands.

This is the summer of great creative contests going on in Nokia-land: from photo, to creative connecting, to developing imaging apps.
1. Let’s start with Nokia US’s #Discover Lumia Photo Contest that has a new theme every two weeks, you, as in a US resident, submit a photo that you have taken that is within the theme parameters, photos get voted on, and then the winner of each theme wins a Nokia Lumia phone! There will be / is 9 themes over the course of the summer and lots of great themes to take photos of – get your camera phones out and start taking photos!
2. Nokia Connects has just started a global creativity and connecting project called Nokia Connects MVC, wherein you submit your creative adventure idea or something you have done with your Nokia Lumia mobile or how you have connected folks to a Lumia, and each month Nokia Connects will pick a new MVC and help you build on your ideas / adventures / connections.
3. Do you have a great idea for a camera / video / imaging app for the Nokia Lumia 1020 and want to see it in the Windows Phone App Store? Then submit your idea to the Nokia Future /Capture Contest before Wed. July 31, 2013. That is two days from now. Get to submitting, even if you are not a mobile developer, if you are chosen they will pair you with a developer and fly you to Lund, Sweden for the Nokia Future/Capture hackathon.
Click on the links for each contest / event and participate in at least one, let this be the summer to let your best creative mobile self out!
The disclosure bit: I am a judge in the first two contests, #Discover Lumia and the Nokia Connects MVC; and I will be submitting one of my image app ideas* to the Nokia Future / Capture Contest.
* This phrase should make my closest friends laugh/giggle, as they know that my computer is a rabbit warren of overly breeding mobile apps in various stages of completion from ideation to testing the last bits.

Fri 07.12.13 – Last night was the Zoom Party for the launch of the Nokia Lumia 1020 at Pier 94 in New York City and here are my photos from the evening.
After meeting up with fellow and fellow-ess bloggers at the hotel, some of the gang taxi’d it over to the venue and a few of us walked. Even though it was hot and humid, it was lovely to get out in the evening light and walk.
Once at the party venue, it was good to hang out with the blogger crew and meet new people as well. The two surprises of the evening was finally meeting Serko in person after knowing him online for 5-6 years and that the blogger crew spent most of the evening hanging out with Nokia’s EVP Chris Weber, who was fun and down to earth.
Due to the migraine that had been trying to attack all day given the lights at the venue, I clipped out early to find food and get rid of the headache, so I missed much of the rest of the party as I heard about this morning before I left for the airport.
It was so very good to see Nokia launch a great camera phone and to see so many lovely folks come out to the event from all over.

Thurs 07.11.13 – And today was the BIG day, the Nokia Zoom ReInvented launch and announcement / demo of the Nokia Lumia 1020 41-megapixel Windows Phone 8 camera phone.
The Zoom ReInvented event was held at pier 94 on the Hudson River in New York City and started nice and early with the announcement and presentation of the Nokia Lumia 1020 by Nokia’s CEO Stephen Elop with help from the imaging team’s Kristina Björknäs and Juha Alakarhu.
After a very spectacular announcement, the back of the stage was opened for everyone to proceed down the length of the pier to the demonstration area, lunch, as well as meeting and session rooms. At each turn through the demonstration area were Nokians with Nokia Lumia 1020s to show you and engage about the device. Also along the sides were small rooms with more detailed technical displays and demos on the sound, lens, and navigating capacities.
The afternoon of Zoom ReInvented was taken up with visiting each display, meeting and talking with folks, as well as attending sessions on applications for the Nokia 1020, technical details of the imaging capabilities by members of the Nokia Imaging team, and a blogger’s session.
Within 20 minutes of the event starting, I was very happy to find out that the new Nokia Pro Camera app would have the ability to set one’s own shutter speed (!!!!), ISO, White Balance, and manual focus from close-up to infinity in a very lovely to use interface. My biggest excitements of the day were the announcement of manual shutter speed and seeing that there is a place for a wrist strap on the device, as well as attending the developer/partner session on what applications are being developed with the new announced Nokia Imaging SDK (Oggl).
Big thanks to Nokia and Nokia US for the invitation to attend the Zoom ReInvented Nokia Lumia 1020 launch event.
An official Ms. Jen photo comparison and review of the Nokia Lumia 1020 coming to a browser near you soon…

Wed 07.10.13 – Today was the big travel day of transporting myself and my bags from LAX to DFW to LGA (La Guardia in New York City) for Nokia’s Zoom ReInvented event. While the whole of the day was taken up with travel, the evening was meeting up with friends, fellow bloggers, and Nokians at the R Lounge on the edge of Times’ Square.
It was good fun to catch up, hear what folks have been up to and what they are excited for / about in the world of mobile, as well as be enveloped in the warm almost sauna-like temperatures of NYC in the summer.
Tomorrow is the big day!
