Local Western Red Tail Hawks and Chickens on Patrol

Local Chickens Passing Each Other While on Patrol Western Red Tailed Hawk in Flight Western Red Tailed Hawks Circling Each Other

Fri. 02.24.17 – Yesterday my Mom and I took the dogs for a walk in the Meadow Creek Meadow and I took my Nikon D800 with a Nikon 70-200mm f/4 lens along for the walk. I am enjoying the reach of the 200mm with the D800’s larger sensor, as I am getting some fun bird photos. Here are a few photos of birds seen out in the wild doing their thing, as you can see the local hens are diligently patrolling their yard and house…

Current Status: Visiting My Mom and It Is SNOWING!!!

... And it is still snowing!

Sun 01.21.17 – I am currently visiting my Mom in Bishop, a small town in the high desert on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Rain was predicted today and the current storm had other opinions on the matter.

I am wildly excited as I love love love snow. It is so exotic! ;o)

Sun 12.18.16 – A photo of Orion Rising over the Moovalya Keys taken from the boat ramp looking east this evening by Ms. Jen with her Lumia 950 camera phone. This was handheld at 4 seconds and 3200 ISO, there was a bit of post-processing to get rid of the glare from the lights on the house.

Happy 13th Birthday to Scruffy McDoglet!

Happy 13th Birthday to Scruffy McDoglet!

Mon. 11.07.16 – On the 7th of November in the year 2003, Mr. Scruffy-licious Alidocious T. McDoglet was born to a pedigreed Maltese family. Within two months, Scruffy – not his birth name – was denied access into the American Kennel Club for having more than the 3-4 regulation spots and hair too thin for a AKC Maltese, whereupon he departed and moved to California.

In March of 2004, Jenifer Hanen (me) and her brother, Joe, found Scruffy on Craigslist and within days he joined the family. Jenifer promptly bought Craig a Jack & Coke at 20×2 that year at SXSWi to thank him for starting a website that allowed her and her brother to get a great dog. Craig likes dogs and was happy that we got Scruffy on his List.

Happy Birthday to the best maltese dog on the planet… Scruffy McDoglet!

Throw Rag at Alex’s Bar

Throw Rag at Alex's Bar

Tues. 11.01.16 – Today is the first day of November and it has been a big few days for folks who celebrate Diwali/Deepavalli, Halloween, All Saints Day and/or Dia de Muertos.

This is my favorite time of the year, not for the holidays but for the change of the light and weather. Given that I have the opposite of SAD and that my migraines tend to be worse with too much bright sunlight, I am usually ecstatic when this darker, cooler time of year rolls around.

The sunlight is soft from now until mid-January. The light is short. And blessedly, the next six weeks will be the only time all year that I will move out of short sleeve shirts and may possibly put a light long sleeve shirt on.

I really need to move to a place with colder weather.

My one festive nod to the start of the dark season was going to the Throw Rag show on Fri. 10.18.16 at Alex’s Bar in Long Beach. The show was delightful, lots of folks showed up in costume, and I got to talk to friends I have not seen in a good, long while. The best costumes of the night were definitively the gentlemen of Throw Rag, particularly Franco’s 1960s groovy matron outfit, wig, and shoes. As for Dino’s amusing rainbow raver meets glam rocker, in the pink foreground in the above photo, well…

Happy All Saints Day! Celebrate your favorite saint, but don’t lose your head over it.
